W is for WATERMELONS

Summer's end is only a few weeks away.  With all this hot weather, I was looking for an inspirational theme for the first week of August.  It hit me when I went to one of our kiddos birthdays up in the mountains and low and behold;  WATERMELON!

This was a great scene with the kids running, playing, and yes, eating watermelon.  While sitting there watching all these little guys, I couldn't stop all the ideas from buzzing in my head (along with outdoor flies buzzing too lol). I new we could do science, math, writing, language arts, poetry and lots of preschool practice opportunities with glue, scissors, and so much more with this one theme, so check out PattyKakesKidz while we find ways to conquer all with this week's theme on WATERMELON!

So much fun with our little ones, but it doesn't stop at just typical preschool work and displaying their cool creations on the walls for all to see.  We also tackle the science of how to use watermelon.  Continue on and see the kids at work making watermelon smoothies...

We discussed what is a watermelon, when and how does it grow and then we learned how to cut one.  

Time to taste our watermelon and clean the rind (with our teeth lol)

Now that's done, time to add it to our blender, along with cut bananas.

Once we finished preparing our shake, and the kids did a "Build Your Own Pasta Dish", we enjoyed a cup of our watermelon shake with lunch.

  
The remainder was poured into ice cream molds for Monday's treat.  They all think they're getting these "bad for you" ice creams, when in fact, it's pure watermelon and bananas.

Getting ready for a bike ride in the early morning before the summer heat gets to be a bit too much.  
Must put in a plug for the masterpiece in background.  We often do group art posters and display for everyone in the neighborhood to see.  It's so sweet to hear people's positive comments about the kid's projects.  This is just another way to introduce "group work".  Some day when they are in college and hear the instructor say, "today we will need to partner up with a group for this week's project".  These little ones will be completely used to the idea and probably end up leading their groups.

 

Nothing wrong with a little nurturing of baby dolls.
